Biography & Credits

Laura Pérez Maquedano (they/them), also known as Lau Maquedano, is a Basque Writer, Director, Producer, and Editor. They’ve had a passion for storytelling since a young age and began their journey writing and illustrating children’s books. They became a published author at the age of 12, with “The Lost Turtle” (Aizkorri, 2013), followed by their second book, “The Poor Cactus” (EC.O Ediciones Cívicas), in 2015. Their diverse passions, from writing, painting, and theater, led them to study Film and Creative Writing at Wesleyan University (2020).

Lau has worked in film Production and Postproduction for companies in New York City, Los Angeles, and Madrid, such as Hungry Man Productions, Mike Tollin ProductionsKabiria Films, HD Studio, and La Mola StudioThey’ve Directed short films such as “Un Oubli Gigantesque” (2018), “Reindeer Woman” (2019), “Lamia” (2020) and “Lip stick” (2022), featured in international festivals such as Huhezinema Film Festival, Lift-Off Film Festival, and Xprest! AUX Festival. As a Producer, their work has been selected at festivals such as New York Transgender Film Festival, Fringe Queer Film Fest, Hudson Valley, and FilmPride Brighton Film Fest. 

Since 2023, Lau has been developing three projects that reflect their voice as an emerging filmmaker: a 2D animated fantasy series about cultural and environmental heritage; “Nova Red”, a live action dystopian queer film; and “Bitxo”, a 2D animated short film about social anxiety. 
 

“Nova Red” has gained support from multiple labs and festivals such as the Aukera Development Lab, Skyline Benidorm ShortPitch Sessions, Evolution Mallorca Screenwriting Contest, Fant Bilbao Pitches, Basque Audiovisual; as well as backing from the Basque public broadcaster Eitb. Meanwhile, “Bitxo” has achieved significant international recognition, being one of five Spanish projects chosen for Annecy 2025’s Animation From Spain MIFA Pitches, and selected for Agora Lab (winning the NewImages Festival Partnership Award), Stuttgart’s Animation Production Days, and Basque Audiovisual Pitching Sessions (receiving the Weird Market Award).

Lau loves genre filmmaking, having an inclination for crafting stories in fantasy, magical realism, and dystopian worlds. Their style delves into intercultural and queer themes, using expressive art design, high-contrast lighting, and bold color palettes, to heighten emotions and bring diverse individuals together. They’re eager for more opportunities to make gripping stories come to fruition.
